A digital product, or one of its versions, can give each customer a key or code when they pay: a licence key, game key, gift card code, invite link or even a login. Customers get it by email and on their order page. Courses and physical items can't have keys.

Turn keys on

  1. Open the product and go to the Delivery tab.
  2. Pick Keys or codes.
  3. Choose From my list (keys you already have; each customer gets the next one) or Made for each customer (a new random key every time, like XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX).
  4. Click Save.

Add keys to your list

  1. Click Add your keys.
  2. Paste them one per line, or click Or upload a .txt or .csv file.
  3. Click the add button. It shows how many keys you're adding.

A key can be up to 500 characters. You can add up to 5,000 at a time. Repeats are skipped, and customers get keys in the order you pasted them. Right after adding, Undo takes that batch back off.

Settings

Once keys are set up, click Edit (the pencil) on the keys row:

  • Customers see it as: the name buyers see. Licence key is the default.
  • Starts with: an optional prefix for made keys, like PRO.
  • When none are left (list keys only): Show Sold out (the default: nobody can buy until you add keys) or Keep selling (orders wait, and buyers get their key by email when you add more).
  • Stop handing out keys turns keys off. Then click Save.

Each unit bought gets one key. A free product gives one key per order. Your own test orders get a key starting with TEST-, never one from your list.

When keys run low

We email you when 5 or fewer keys are left, and again when they run out. While a published product has none left, or orders are waiting, you also get a reminder every morning (08:00 UTC). Turn that off with Out of keys reminder on Email notifications.

A waiting order shows Waiting for keys. New keys go to waiting orders first, oldest first.

Manage given keys

See keys lists Unused and Given out keys, with each key's order, email and date.

  • Turn it off stops a key working. Turn it back on undoes that.
  • A refund turns the order's keys off for good.
  • Give a key hands one to someone yourself, like a reviewer.

Check keys from your software

Send a POST request to https://<your store address>/api/LicenseKeyVerify with product_id (⋯ → Copy ID in the editor) and license_key (what the customer typed). Add increment_uses=true to count an activation. The answer says whether the key is valid, and whether it's active, refunded or disabled. Each address can check 60 times a minute. For a version's keys, send the product's ID.
